60163 Tornado at Totnes

Hi all, The year 2009 was when I retired and in the August I went down to Totnes with Shirley to photograph 60163 “Tornado” not long after it had been built. Here it is storming through the middle road on the approach to the station with a Bristol to Plymouth special taken in Black and white. After the train had passed through I decided to have a trip to Buckfastleigh behind Great Western 0-6-0 pannier tank 6490 to finish off

It seemed to be the regular engine at the time as I saw it a few weeks later at Malton. Lots of Rowen trees line the side of

Number 10 at Hythe RH&DR Ken

Hi all, A day out on the RH&DR Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, Kent. 4-6-2 number 10 “Doctor Syn” at Hythe about to work the 12.00 to Dungeness. Is this really a steam engine? It’s more like a museum piece. The reverend Doctor Christopher Syn was the hero in Russell Thorndyke novels about the hero Smuggler of Romney Marsh. Garath Evans marches up to the engine for a cab ride and a bit of fireing. Will he fit? Will he

77-261 at Vienna East 30/06/1972

Hi all, A lucky shot of a class 77, 77-261. Pacific tank engine a rare machine with this wheel arrangement indeed as it passes by the depot at Vienna East. The engine is fitted with a Gisele ejector chimney which is very prominent in this side on view. For an Austrian machine it has very clean lines made possible with a very large water tank almost the full length of the engine along side the fire box, boiler and smoke

Hi all,It’s an absolute pea souper at 09.29 am in the morning and here is West German Pacific 012-073 about to leave Lathen with the 08.08 Norddeich to Koln on time. Photography for taking pictures of moving trains was impossible in these conditions and it was just necessary to wait for it to clear. As an ex train driver I know it was essential in these conditions to know exactly where you were. Unlike driving a road vehicle where you have
