East German 2 cylinder 4-6-2 pacific 01 2137 gets underway from Bautzen east of Dresden on this glorious sunny morning with train D451, the overnight express from Frankfurt Main to Warsaw. You really had to be there to appreciate the noise it made departing with this heavy train made up of 12 coaches plus a dead class 132 diesel on the back climbing up the rising gradient towards Gorlitz and the Polish border, it was unbelievable and completely unexpected as

Picture of the Week: 34007 Kidderminster

I stayed on late in the evening at Kidderminster after a long sunny day photographing on the SVR to see 34007 Wadebridge come in on the last train from Bridgnorth and shunt the stock. 34007 was soon to go back home after a spell on lone to the Severn Valley Railway in April 2013. By this time everyone else had gone but as luck has it 5 hot air balloons passed over the area at the time and I managed

Been to the lake District this weekend. Here are a few shots of number 1245, Andrew Barclay 0-6-0 Tank. It was rescued from a scrap merchant in Kirkaldy and restored and painted in Caledonian Blue. Picture of the Week: 99-1789 East Germany

Way down in the southern part East Germany narrow gauge 2-10-2T 99-1789 has just left Neudorf station working to 14.52 to Cranzal. Neudorf is a small hamlet on the line to the ski resort of Kurort Oberwiesental on what was then the Czechoslovakian border at the time. Fortunately the sun has just come out. I stood there anxiously watching the sunlight pass over the landscape towards the railway hoping for it to reach and light up the subject in time,

Picture of the Week: 44871/45407 Chirk

Stood at Chirk station waiting to take a picture of this train last week but the sun came out and was completely in the wrong place. I then found out it was over an hour late so set off to find a more suitable location and here it is. Not to bad really, looking through some ones terrace overlooking the valley. 44871 and 45407 are seen crossing the bridge next to the canal viaduct which is out of sight on

038-711 Picture of the week

Ex Prussian P8 4-6-0 038-711 one of the last remaining three engines still in service at the time this photo was taken, February 1973. These three would be finished for good three months later in May. They were the last of a once 4000 strong class. The German railways gave them a great send off in the May I believe. Here it is seen leaving Freudenstadt with the 14.11 to Hausach which is near to the French border during an

Have you seen this one before? if so I apologise. 2 pictures, the original and a cropped version. I took this the first year I retired and had always wanted to get a photo of the old church of St Mary’s as it looks so nice along side the railway at Cholsey east of Didcot having passed it hundreds of times at work. This is where Agatha Christie is buried. So here we are and this is the only angle
