Picture of the Week: 34067 Cholsey

Have you seen this one before? if so I apologise. 2 pictures, the original and a cropped version. I took this the first year I retired and had always wanted to get a photo of the old church of St Mary’s as it looks so nice along side the railway at Cholsey east of Didcot having passed it hundreds of times at work. This is where Agatha Christie is buried. So here we are and this is the only angle

Picture of the day 5043 at Elford

Been after a picture like this for years and here it is at last, a silver reflection of the sun along the train and a glint off the firebox front. The conditions were just right, frost, sun rise and the right angle at Elford this morning of 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcombe with the 0.43 Tyseley to York. There’s a bit of flare almost like a rainbow on the left getting past the lens hood as the sun was almost

Todays pictures

Another gloomy day as you can see. I went out to Craven Arms for two steam specials but finished up with only one as 5029 Nunney Castle failed so was replaced by a class 67. Never mind. Had a good walk whilst waiting and did see a Red Kite, this was a first for here. Anyway here are 44871 and 45407 with the 07.07 from London Paddington going very well with 13 on along with a couple of odd shots

Picture of the Week: Westhouses

An interesting view of 18B Westhouses depot on the Erewash between Trent and Clay Cross north of Alfreton. In the shed yard are 8Fs a lone 9F, the cab of a Jinty 0-6-0 tank can also be seen. What must be one of the last 4Fs 0-6-0s in existence at the time with a yellow stripe on it’s cab which meant not to work under the overhead wires south of Crewe. Saltley had just one left 44057 from a previous

Picture of the week: Midford

For Somerset and Dorset fans here is Southern West Country class 34041 Wilton and BR Standard 73052 coming off the single line from Bath Junction at Midford with a southbound express for Bournemouth. The Pacific is carrying the old Somerset and Dorset express head code even though it’s 12 years since nationalisation and change, they just wouldn’t change around here for anyone! The lamps should both be over the buffers. Just look at that wonderful S&DJR signal on the lattice

Picture of the Week: Carlisle

If you have been to the pub down the drive from Ribblehead station on the Settle and Carlisle line this is the view from the loo. (the loo with a view) The late afternoon sun shines from the west on Ribblehead Viaduct casting long shadows on the valley below as a Standard 9F 2-10-0 with steam on approaches with a southbound freight from Carlisle. The distant signal for Blea Moor signal box is off in the opposite direction and seen

Picture of the Week: 1898 Adams 02 0-4-4 Tank

An 1898 (rebuild for the Isle of White) Adams 02 0-4-4 Tank comes off Ryde Pier silhouetted by a glorious sun set in the west along with a reflection in the water. It was also sunset for steam on the Isle of White, the London Underground stock would soon arrive and replace them. The last remaining run down steam engines carried on valiantly whilst the third rail was installed on the last line to be in use to Shanklin. It

Picture of the Week: 33005 Reading South depot

Some of you may never have seen one of these but at least one would be standing around on Reading South Southern shed when paying a visit along with Maunsell U 2-6-0’s and even a School 4-4-0 if you were lucky. It’s a Bullied Q1 0-6-0 33005. They were never clean except when in ex works condition. Forty were built during the second world war and were the most powerful 0-6-0’s in Britain. Nothing elegant about them but always unmistakable
