Austerity 2-8-0 90486 of 2F Woodford Halse way off it’s home ground, some one must have borrowed it, approaching the level crossing at Denady between Doncaster and Mexborough. Not a great quality picture but this is real industrial history. Alongside the line is Denady Main Colliery and ahead lies Lowfield Junction and Doncaster. Behind the photographer beyond Mexborough and it’s steam depot is Wath yard and Barnsley. There were approximately 35 pits within 20 miles of this location. This line here was the South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun navigation and this is coal country and railways everywhere. At the crossing are two single decker trolley buses. A green Mexborough and Swinton, and a blue Rotherham Corporation plus one car! Look at the size of those coal staiths with the pit head behind. It certainly does not look like this today.
March 1961.
