Picture of the week 40080 Sutton Coldfield

A nice sunny view at Sutton Coldfield of Stanier 2-6-2 tank 40080 working a Lichfield to Birmingham New Street train. This is the very spot were seven months prior to this photo being taken on Sunday 23rd January 1955 a Sunday diverted West of England express left the track on the sharp bend, the 12.15 York to Bristol. New platform edging stones can be seen and the up platform roof still needs painting after being repaired.
This was caused by excessive speeding on the 35mph restriction coming down from Four Oaks through the station causing considerable loss of life. 17 people died including the driver and fireman, and 23 were seriously injured.
July 1955.
