Picture of the Week: CRUMLIN VIADUCT
Picture of the Week: CRUMLIN VIADUCT

I promised you a picture of Crumlin Viaduct in South Wales. Here it is looking towards Pontypool as a GWR 56xx 0-6-2T is seen crossing light engine high above the valley floor where the line up from Newport comes and goes on to Aberbeeg and Ebbw Vale. The line that the bridge carried came from Pontypool and traversed the South Wales valleys continuing onto Aberdare and Neath. Way down below are houses and a freight yard. Up ahead in the distance at the end of the bridge can be seen Crumlin Junction signal box where a line went off to the left of the picture down to Aberbeeg. The signal gantry for the junction can just be seen to the right of the signal box. The line the bridge carried was closed in 1964 and the bridge dismantled.
July 1963.
