Picture of the Week: 4246 ABERBEEG

A nice row of big and small tankies on what is probably a Sunday on a rare sunny day up the South Wales valley’s, a scene not many will have experienced. Here is Great Western 2-8-0 4246 leading the line up at 86H Aberbeeg on the Great Western route up from Newport and at the junction of the lines northward to Ebbw Vale and Abertillery. This shed was just north of Crumlin, which is where the viaduct was situated that crossed the valley way below carrying the Great Western east to west line from Swansea to Pontypool Road. (Picture to follow)

I had two visits at this time to South Wales on Sunday spotters trips and this is one of the sheds we visited and this engine was there that day. A 10.00 pm Saturday start and an overnight journey by coach. Over a thousand engines were seen on each trip at all the sheds in South Wales which were visited on both these occasions. I still have all the numbers recorded! here they are for Aberbeeg. This was the only time you would ever get to see any of these engines that spent their working lives hauling coal up and down or across the valleys.
April 1962.
